The Essendon RSL is one of the oldest sub branches in Victoria. Past members have included a VC awardee, a member of the ill-fated HMAS Sydney Crew, Essendon Football Club players, and many a famous name.
Today we meet at the great Windy Hill Sports Club, corner Napier & Brewster Streets Essendon.
We are proud to hold an annual Dawn Service in April as well as our two services for ANZAC and Remembrance Days, and the associated appeals.
We are further proud that with those appeals, where we are entitled to keep half for the welfare of our own members, we donate 100% to ANZAC House to help veterans and dependant families anywhere.
But that is not all that we do:
Every first Thursday of the month we hold a morning tea and muffins for members and friends.
Every third Tuesday evening we have a Happy Hour with free nibbles and discounted drinks for all as well as stating THE ODE in remembrance of THE FALLEN. We also offer our members an annual bus trip to an interesting venue and three free lunches or dinners.
We are a happy lot, as our Bowling team will attest.
Essendon’s Flame
In honour of Essendon RSL
Where Moonee Ponds Creek breezes glide,
And city skies and suburbs bide,
There stands a place, both proud and still—
The heart and soul: Essendon RSL.
Its walls remember what was lost,
The quiet courage, bitter cost,
Of those who wore the nation’s thread,
And marched where angels feared to tread.
Through every war, through time and test,
It honoured service, gave them rest—
A haven built on mateship’s core,
Where veterans find a home once more.
Not just in stone or fading name,
But living light, a burning flame—
In laughter shared and stories passed,
In guiding hope that long will last.
From Anzac dawns to poppy days,
In heartfelt tributes, solemn praise,
They stand with care, with steady hand,
The sentinels of this great land.
Essendon’s soul, both old and new,
It shelters those who still come through—
Young hearts who ask, and elders tell,
Within the halls of the RSL.
So raise a glass, remember well
The pride of place: Essendon RSL.
For in its watch, we see the way
To honour peace, and guard the day.
